Overview
In Grandma's herb garden, Alice notices a flash of green and gold beneath a stem. It is a chrysalis, and inside it a butterfly is slowly becoming. Alice is enchanted. She sits beside it, waits, checks again and asks whether it might hurry, just a little.
But becoming cannot be rushed.
As wind gathers and rain approaches, Alice longs to keep the chrysalis safe. With Grandma patiently close by, she watches for each tiny change: a dark line, a tremble, the first careful movement from within. When the butterfly begins its difficult journey into the world, Alice wants to help. Grandma gently explains that some struggles are necessary. If Alice opens the chrysalis too soon, the butterfly may never gain the strength it needs to fly.
So Alice finds another kind of helping. She builds a small shelter from twigs and leaves, sits quietly beneath the dripping garden, and records what she sees in her notebook. Her hands remain open and still. Gradually, the butterfly emerges, rests and unfolds its brilliant blue wings.
Alice and the Butterfly is the second book in the Alice of the Ash Grove series of richly illustrated wisdom stories for children aged four to eight. Set in the luminous garden and woodland world cared for by Alice's grandparents, this gentle story explores patience, loving restraint and the courage to let growth happen in its own time.
Young readers will recognise Alice's eagerness and her wish to make things easier for someone she loves. Parents, teachers and librarians will find natural opportunities to talk about waiting, frustration, perseverance, observation and the difference between helping and interfering. The story never treats patience as passive. Alice learns that attentive waiting can itself be a generous act of love.
With realistic painterly illustrations, warm Australian light and a child-centred voice, Alice and the Butterfly offers a reassuring read-aloud experience and a memorable visual metaphor: wings become strong through the slow work of emerging. Sometimes love does not pull or push. Sometimes love protects, watches and waits with quiet hands.
