The year is 1984. The Cold War nuclear arms race is at its height, and British intelligence agent Heidi Sperling, long embedded in East Berlin, has information that she fears could affect the balance of power between the Soviets and the capitalists. Somewhere deep in the waters between Iceland and Scotland, a Soviet submarine has been lying dormant for the last three years. But now it’s active, and the British intelligence service wants to know what threat, exactly, it poses. Heidi joins the crew of the HMS Viking in their infiltration and investigation of the submarine, which soon grows from confusing to horrifying. There are no advanced atomic weapons aboard the abandoned vessel, TK-15. Only a computer system far more advanced than anything any of the crew has ever seen and a series of bewildering tapes documenting the slow descent of one of TK-15’s crew into a madness that proves to be infectious. TK-15 begins to assert its dark control over Heidi and the rest of the Viking, warping their understanding of reality and driving them to self-harm. The only hope of survival is to decouple from the Soviet sub and escape to the surface. But when anything you see could be an illusion, how can you tell the difference between safety and a further descent into madness?

Atomic Coffin combines the creeping dread of Cold War brinkmanship with the terrifying unknown of cosmic horror. Author Benedict Anning plays with reality as much as the psychic parasite that lurks within TK-15, disorienting readers as they are forced to question what is real and what is a figment of Heidi’s subconscious. Imagined or not, the horrors of TK-15 seep insidiously into every conversation within the book, coloring each page with distrust and the potential for violence. In both the creation of Atomic Coffin’s setting and its slow, deliberate pacing, Anning successfully translates the chronic uncertainty and unease of the Atomic Age into horror, combining the near-constant dread of nuclear annihilation with the age-old fear of the deep ocean and things that go bump in the night. A brilliant mix of Tom Clancy and Ridley Scott, Atomic Coffin is a claustrophobic thrill-ride that will leave you guessing.
