Awakened Presence : A Journey in to Mindfulness
Overview
A fundamental purpose of learning mindfulness is social emotional learning to provide everyone with opportunities to develop self awareness, self-management, and social awareness, which in turn would lead to positive goal-oriented behaviours and the cultivation of collaborative relationships. While scholarly literature lists several strategies to foster social-emotional learning skills, there is little evidence of their effectiveness. There is research to support that mindfulness practices cultivate specific outcomes that align with social-emotional learning skills outcomes. It has been determined that in order for these approaches to have a positive effect, need support to define, implement, evaluate, and adopt mindfulness curriculum according to their needs. Mindfulness compassion encourages individuals to recognize the interconnected nature of all beings and the environment. Similarly, global citizenship promotes the idea that we are all interconnected and interdependent members of a global community. Both concepts emphasize the importance of considering the well-being of others, regardless of geographic or cultural boundaries. In essence, mindfulness compassion can deepen one's sense of global citizenship by fostering a greater awareness of the interconnectedness of all beings, nurturing empathy towards diverse communities, and inspiring ethical action on a global scale. By integrating mindfulness compassion practices into the ethos of global citizenship, individuals can contribute to creating a more compassionate and sustainable world for present and future generations. Global Citizenship defined as "the cognitive dimension, which concerns the learners' acquisition of knowledge, understanding and critical thinking. The socio-emotional dimension relates to the learners' sense of belonging to a common humanity, sharing values and responsibilities, empathy, solidarity and respect for differences and diversity" (UNESCO, 2016). To ensure all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote professional development, including, healthy, productive lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of work culture. Competencies may be attained by introducing an experiential training program called Mindfulness Compassion. Mindfulness has been defined as "intentional present moment nonjudgmental awareness". In essence, mindfulness encourages individuals to observe their experiences without judgment or criticism, while also extending kindness, understanding, and empathy to themselves and those around them. This combination can lead to greater emotional resilience, deeper connections with others, and a more compassionate approach to life's challenges. So, what does this mean, and why is it important? Let's start with the present moment part. Most of the times are minds are wandering, thinking about the future or the past, and are not focused on what we are doing right now. This has several consequences. First, if we are not paying attention to what we are doing, we are likely to be less effective and to make mistakes. Second, we live our lives in the present moment, not in the future or the past, and if we're thinking about something else, we can miss out on our lives while they're happening. Third, research has shown that we are happier when we are paying attention than when our minds are wandering. The next part of the definition is that this awareness is intentional, that we have made a choice to pay attention. Thus, we are aware that we are aware. Finally, this awareness is nonjudgmental. Whatever our experience is now is just what it is. We often don't like what's happening right now- we want things to be faster or slower or nicer- yet these judgments often just tend to make us feel worse.
