Frazer "], "item_description" : "Balder the Beautiful lays bare the fire-lit heart of Europe's oldest rites and the startling proposition that a person's soul may be conceived as separable from the living body. Belief survives in ritual flame. In this richly documented volume Sir James Frazer assembles folk testimony, saga and comparative evidence into a rigorously argued study of pagan fire festivals and the external soul doctrine. He traces how ancient european rituals, from seasonal bonfires to household customs, encode ideas about life, death, kingship and renewal. At once a classic anthropology text and a vivid mythology and folklore study, the work blends exhaustive sourcing with interpretive clarity for readers drawn to myth, ritual and comparative religion. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. An exemplar of nineteenth century scholarship, Balder the Beautiful occupies a notable place in european cultural history and in the wider body of sir james frazer works. Often read as a golden bough companion to his larger enquiries, it has informed generations of comparative religion book scholarship and remains suited to university course reading. Equally at home on the shelf of the curious reader and as a valued addition to any academic reference collection, this edition appeals to casual readers fascinated by pagan fire festivals and to classic-literature collectors who prize enduring studies of culture and belief.", "item_img_path" : "https://covers4.booksamillion.com/covers/bam/9/35/421/421/9354214215_b.jpg", "price_data" : { "retail_price" : "29.58", "online_price" : "29.58", "our_price" : "29.58", "club_price" : "29.58", "savings_pct" : "0", "savings_amt" : "0.00", "club_savings_pct" : "0", "club_savings_amt" : "0.00", "discount_pct" : "10", "store_price" : "" } }
