Overview
Billy is a rambunctious young boy who dreams of adventures beyond his home. When a hot-air balloon race comes to town, he rides his bicycle to find an eye-opening, dazzling form of aviation that amazes him. He goes for a wonderful ride into the countryside, but is late coming home, and must face the consequences. He cherishes the memories of the race and still dreams of upcoming adventures that await once he gets older, which can take him around the world. The book is written by a balloon pilot of more than 40 years with detailed, colorful illustrations. It features a typical hot-air balloon festival, with pilots looking to the sky and checking weather conditions. Subtle clues to the speed of the wind are depicted with flags, leaves and kites flying in the wind, with it calming down with a drooped flag and calm water. It also shows what a typical flight in a balloon is like, including seeing schools, trees, lakes, mountains, and neighborhoods from above, as well as birds and an airplane sharing the skies with the balloons. Steering a balloon is only accomplished by finding winds blowing in different directions, so sometimes balloonists don't even know what town they will land in, but hopefully their retrieve team will arrive to bring them back. Billy dreams of all the places he'll someday visit with a balloon, including balloon-friendly communities including Albuquerque, New Mexico; Indianola, Iowa; the Adirondack Balloon Festival in Glens Falls, New York; Caton, Ohio; Reno, Nevada; Boise, Idaho; St. Louis, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; Lewiston, Maine; Decatur, Alabama; Plano, Texas; Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Battle Creek, Michigan, and more.
