"[H]ere is another of Mel Gibson's fine performances, a reminder that he is after all a superb actor - 05/04/2011 Chicago Sun-Times

"Gibson fully conveys the suicidal depression that ails his aptly named character, Walter Black....This is high-quality work from a professional..." -- Grade: B- - 05/20/2011 Entertainment Weekly

3 stars out of 5 -- "As a director, Foster's hallmark is restraint....Foster's film is stocked with unique, warm-hearted virtues." - 07/01/2011 Total Film

"[A] movie with real nerve endings, something we don't usually see on the mainstream movie landscape: Its subject isn't just midlife ennui, but true suffering." - 05/05/2011 Movieline
