Overview
He was a butcher's apprentice from Brooklyn. He became the most feared killer in the American Mafia.
On January 20, 1983, police opened the trunk of a Cadillac parked at a Sheepshead Bay boat club. Inside was Roy DeMeo, the Gambino soldier whose crew may have killed as many as two hundred people.
For almost a decade, DeMeo and a handful of young men from Canarsie and Flatlands met each night at the Gemini Lounge, a plain-looking bar on Flatlands Avenue. In a small apartment behind it they turned murder into a routine. They shot their victims, cut them apart and buried them under the city's garbage. They also ran one of the largest stolen-car rings in New York's history, shipping luxury cars to Kuwait and Puerto Rico. Their bosses took the profits and looked away.
Blood Work follows DeMeo's life from his working-class childhood to his partnership with the Gambino captain Nino Gaggi. It covers his years as Paul Castellano's most useful and most dangerous man, and his betrayal by the crew he had trained. It draws on federal trial records, the testimony of insiders and his son's memoir, and it names the victims wherever the record allows.
This revised and corrected edition is the story of how an ordinary neighborhood produced an extraordinary killer, and how a powerful crime family let him work.
