THE GENESIS OF THE THEOLOGICAL LENSES

In 2017, while I was recovering from a stroke, I found myself reflecting deeply upon the many popular teachings that were being disseminated among the masses and readily embraced, often without sufficient examination as to whether such teachings were biblically sound or theologically consistent with the whole counsel of God.

That period of physical affliction became, paradoxically, a period of profound theological reflection. I began to ask a fundamental question: By what theological measure may popular teaching and preaching be examined objectively, rather than merely accepted because it is popular, persuasive, or repeatedly proclaimed?

It was within this context that I began to formulate a number of theological lenses through which teachings and interpretations could be examined, tested, and evaluated against the wider testimony of Scripture.

The underlying premise was not novel: the Apostle Paul declared that he had not shunned to declare "all the counsel of God" (Acts 20:27). The implication is significant. Christian doctrine cannot properly be constructed by elevating selected biblical truths while neglecting, diminishing, or effectively discarding other truths that Scripture likewise presents as essential. The whole counsel of God must remain the governing theological horizon.

It was against this background that I developed what I have termed the DUALISTIC EQUATION-one of several theological lenses through which I sought to examine theological propositions rationally and objectively. The purpose of this lens was to expose the inadequacy of approaches that reduce complex biblical realities to one-sided theological equations while overlooking the corresponding and sometimes apparently opposing realities presented within the biblical text.

The issue, therefore, was not simply whether a particular teaching contained an element of biblical truth. Many erroneous or incomplete teachings may indeed contain a fragment of truth. The more searching question is whether that fragment has been isolated from the larger theological framework of Scripture and subsequently elevated into an all-encompassing proposition.

The Dualistic Equation was conceived precisely to interrogate such reductionism.

It became a means by which I could ask:

What happens to one biblical truth when another equally significant biblical truth is omitted?

Can a theological proposition be regarded as sound when it accommodates one pole of Scripture but suppresses or neglects its corresponding pole?

Does the teaching faithfully represent the whole counsel of God, or does it construct a selective theology from only those passages that support its preferred conclusion?

These questions eventually became foundational to my subsequent study of the Old Testament Minor Prophets, and particularly to my investigation of the Book of Zephaniah.

For Zephaniah does not permit Scripture to be reduced to a single theological note. Judgment stands alongside salvation; wrath alongside mercy; defilement alongside purification; divine absence alongside divine presence; the proud alongside the humble; and the trembling of the Day of the LORD alongside the rejoicing of the restored people of God.

What initially emerged from a period of personal adversity in 2017 therefore developed into a broader theological method of inquiry.

The present work is, in part, the fruit of that journey.
