Overview
The Cappella Reale di Napoli represented the embodiment of artistic excellence throughout the long reign of the Bourbon dynasty in eighteenth-century Naples. The ensemble recruited the finest musicians - instrumentalists and vocalists - from throughout the vast kingdom to form an elite group of artists who performed a broad repertoire, sacred and secular, vocal and instrumental. As the official orchestra of the sovereigns, it projected images of power, authority, and regal identity through its intimate association and identification with the Crown. In this volume, DelDonna pieces together new and largely unstudied archival evidence, including heretofore unknown music, to reconstruct the history of Europe's premier orchestra from 1734 to 1800. The significance of this history extends beyond the music of Naples, reflecting the emergence of the modern orchestra and the development of symphonic music across Europe.
