Overview

Two witchy sisters find themselves framed for the disappearance of millions of dollars in this atmospheric locked room mystery--from the New York Times bestselling author of Payback's a Witch and the critically acclaimed author of All Dressed Up. "Blends suspense, family drama, magic, and romance into a twisty ride that's impossible to put down . . . Don't miss this witchy mystery full of heart "--Gloria Chao, USA Today bestselling author of The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club

As descendants of a Salem witch, sisters Tori and Cassie Bishop have the occult credentials--but their trickle of tarot readings isn't paying the bills. On the brink of eviction, they accept a too-good-to-be-true offer: play "witches in residence" for a dying, wealthy widow in her secluded Berkshires mansion for the Fall season. But from the minute they arrive at the gothic estate, it's clear: they've been dropped into a far riskier game than their smoke and mirrors can save them from. Rose, the widow, is desperate. Her family is conniving. The staff is ominous. And some guests in the house are drawn to the sisters in ways that lean more . . . personal. But just as the sisters are starting to settle into the mysterious home and their role in it, Rose dies after a s ance--and her millions vanish overnight. Trapped in a viper's nest of competing motives and twisted secrets, Tori and Cassie must untangle a web of greed and deception using every trick they have--magical or not--to clear their names. Because someone else in Berwyn House is running their own con . . . and they've set up the sisters to take the fall.

Two sisters reckon with thieves, paranormal forces and their descent from a Salem witch in Lana Harper and Jilly Gagnon’s Cards on the Table.

Tori and Cassie Bishop are barely breaking even in Salem, Massachusetts. Despite their pedigree—they’re descendants of one of the first women executed during the infamous witch trials—the women are struggling to drum up enough interest in their tarot card readings and spell castings to stay afloat. Then they’re offered the deal of a lifetime: A wealthy, dying widow wants them to move into her mansion and help her reconnect with her long-dead son. If they can do that, she’ll pay them enough to set up their very own store in Salem.

But once they arrive, Tori and Cassie realize they’re in a dangerous position. The widow, Rose, hasn’t been totally honest with them about her intentions, and her family is distrustful of the sisters and looking for reasons to ask them to leave. When Rose dies during a séance and her fortune is stolen overnight, Tori and Cassie are accused of the worst. They must work together to clear their names and figure out who set them up to take the fall.

Cards on the Table is an atmospheric cozy mystery rife with misdirection and complicated family dynamics. The relationship between Tori and Cassie is the heartbeat of the book. They clearly love each other, but they’re both still grappling with how their mother’s abandonment of them as children has affected their relationship. While Rose’s family members bicker over her wealth, Cassie and Tori are working through their own complicated inheritance.

Harper and Gagnon weave magic through the story to great effect. The sisters have very different views of the paranormal: Tori believes in reading body language, not tea leaves, while Cassie trusts wholeheartedly in her abilities, and their differing perceptions of magic increase the overall tension.

For much of the novel, the central mystery surrounds why Rose invited Tori and Cassie specifically to her mansion and whether they can trust her family members. Rose’s death takes place late in the book, and some readers may struggle with the mystery’s pacing. Still, Harper and Gagnon do excellent work laying out the full cast of secondary characters and developing Tori and Cassie’s complex relationship. By the time the mystery gets in full swing, readers will be completely invested in the sisters’ story.

Cards on the Table is an engaging read, perfect for fans of complicated relationships and paranormal mysteries.
