Carpet Python : A Practical Handbook on Feeding, Housing, Breeding, Handling, and Maintaining the Health of Carpet Pythons
Overview
What Are Carpet Pythons?
Carpet pythons (Morelia spilota) are a group of large, non-venomous constrictor snakes found in the Australasian region. They are part of the Pythonidae family, which includes some of the most well-known python species in the world. The name "carpet python" comes from their intricate and richly patterned scales, which resemble the woven designs of oriental carpets. Their coloration can vary greatly from olive green, brown, and black to striking yellows, whites, and golds depending on their subspecies and natural habitat.
These snakes are highly regarded for their impressive size, striking appearance, and relatively docile behavior, especially when acclimated to human handling. Adult carpet pythons typically range from 6 to 10 feet in length, although some individuals, particularly Coastal Carpet Pythons, have been recorded at lengths exceeding 13 feet. Despite their size, carpet pythons are not aggressive by nature. With proper care and regular, respectful handling, many become calm and tolerant, making them suitable for intermediate to advanced reptile keepers.
