Overview
Austria, 1941. Behind the high walls of Hartheim Castle, a place designated to systematically kill those the Nazi regime deems unworthy of life, some people still choose to see the human being in front of them. Anna Weiss is the senior nurse, and she initially believes in the necessity of the euthanasia programme and the work at Hartheim. But when a child arrives who should never have been sent there, Anna must decide how far she is willing to go for those who have no voice. Inspired by the Nazi euthanasia programme and the history of Hartheim Castle, The Castle of Mercy is a dark and powerful novel about finding moral courage when complicity is expected, and what it takes to remain human in a world that has lost its humanity.
