The Cat's Tale : Letters From My Grandfather
Overview
This book has been some time in the making. But it is also the result of a happy accident. On the one hand, I have for many years wanted to tell part of my grandfather's very interesting story. He was born into an immigrant family in Chicago in the 1920s, and spoke little English until he was 14. He was a Pacific Marine during Warld War II. He was injured. He received a Purple Heart. But the idea of a book of letters was entirely by accident. One day while cleaning out the garage, a massive trove of letter was discovered. Wonderful letters written in the kind of penmanship and tight cursive that better belonged in a different century. My one bit of advice in this book would of course be to always open boxes in your garage or attic before tossing them away.
The format of this book is meant to paint a picture in the mind of you the reader. Intersperced between letters to old girlfriends (my grandmother being one oft hem), Marine Corps buddies, farmers, and exchange students. This, I hope, will help to transport you back to 1940s America, and help you imagine the lives that these very real people experienced.
