Challenges in Managing Protected Areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Overview
Protected areas are internationally recognized as a key tool for the conservation of species and ecosystems. They can also make a significant contribution to the local economy through the development of sustainable and eco-friendly forms of tourism. This study has highlighted the challenge of managing protected areas in the DRC, given the various anthropogenic pressures linked to population growth and the extreme poverty of local communities. Although under Congolese law wildlife resources are part of the national heritage and belong to the state, only by empowering local communities can the sustainable management of these resources be ensured. This study is intended for anyone interested in the issue of protected areas.
