Movie Reviews

Synopsis:
Playwright Neil Simon based this comedy/drama on his own second marriage -- which began in the wake of his first wife's death from cancer. The last thing widower George Schneider expects is to fall in love again so soon after losing his spouse. Recent divorcee Jennie MacLaine also would like to take some time before starting another relationship. So, of course, their 10-day, whirlwind courtship results in matrimony. However, it doesn't take much time for Jennie to realize that her new husband is hardly ready for wedded bliss. Wracked with guilt and feeling "unfaithful" to his first wife's memory, George simply can't feel happy. Will Jennie have the patience to fight the ghost of her predecessor, and help George feel he's deserving of love?

Notes:
Neil Simon was married to actress Marsha Mason at the time he wrote the play on which this film is based; they have since divorced. Oscar de la Renta designed the clothes worn by Marsha Mason and Prasuti designed the wardrobe for Valerie Harper. Filmed on location in New York City; shot in Panavision.

Reviews:
"...Mason gives a vibrant, appealing performance....[She] carries it ably..." - 12/14/1979 New York Times, p.C14
