Overview
This collection of basic papers in shock compression science makes available not only some of the most important classic papers on shock waves by Poisson, Rankine, Earnshaw, Riemann, and Hugoniot, which remain important references. Also included are two path-breaking papers from the 1940s on shocks in solids and fluids by theorists Bethe and Weyl, as well as works by Taylor and Rayleigh that bridge the gap between the early and recent periods. Although the ideas and results of these classic papers remain of current interest, many of them have been hard to find, since the journals in which they were published are not available in many libraries. In addition, papers written in French and German have been translated by the editors to make them accessible to a wider audience. This collection is thus not only a valuable historical resource but also a vital reference for those working in the field.
