Overview
They do not hide in the dark. They hide in plain sight.
For centuries, cultures have described human-shaped beings that can vanish at will-figures that shimmer, fold out of view, or simply stop being there. Folklore called them watchers, walkers between worlds, things that wear the shape of a person until the moment they decide not to. Modern reports use different language: cloaking, optical distortion, selective visibility. The descriptions keep lining up.
In Cloaked, Nathan Crowe examines the phenomenon itself. Drawing on folklore, historical accounts, military and intelligence rumors, ufology, cryptid research, and a selection of firsthand reports, Crowe asks what people have actually been describing when they say a humanoid was there one second and gone the next.
The book traces the idea across traditions and eras: invisible watchers in old stories, heat-shimmer "glimmer" figures in woods and bedrooms, claims of beings that can reveal themselves to one person in a group and remain unseen by the rest, and the uneasy overlap with reports of cloaked craft, interdimensional entities, and things that hunt by remaining just outside ordinary perception. Crowe does not treat every story as proven. He treats the pattern as the subject-what it looks like, where it repeats, and what it might mean if even a fraction of it is real.
