From early 1980s pieces such as The Fullness of the Image and the Poverty of Criticism (on Xue Baochai) and The Soul of the Flower, the Embodiment of Poetry (on Lin Daiyu), to a series of short essays in Knowledge of Literature and History; from The Dialectical Charm of the Image System in Dream of the Red Chamber to The Dream of the Red Chamber as a Spiritual Home - everything I have written on these matters springs from close engagement with the text, treating the novel as a work of literature and an aesthetic object, in order to discover and explore its artistic mysteries and the true meaning of life.
