Componential Analysis of Meaning
Overview
Componential Analysis of Meaning is an approach of translating lexical items of related words within a domain which proves to be very effective in bridging the lexical gaps that exist between and among languages of different families and cultures. In the book, five lexical domains, namely, Abstract Nouns of Sensory Quality (ANSQ); Colour Terms; Precious Stones, Honourific Terms and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) terminologies were treated. The words so translated from English to Hausa display a situation where some of the translated versions were a complete equivalents between the languages while some were partially justifiable. In the current trend of globalisation, the need for the importance of this kind of lexical Semantics cannot be overlooked.
