Dead Ringer : A Carl Weller Mystery
Overview
He rang the bell. The house answered.
Carl Weller came to Ann Arbor to stand up at his old partner's third wedding and pick up a little cash serving papers on the side. The third envelope was for a Dearborn man named Karim Haddad. Carl walked up the porch steps and rang the doorbell, and the house blew up.
Now Karim is missing, a graduate student is dead in the woods outside a town called Hell, and the FBI has a theory that points straight at Dearborn's Arab community. It's a good theory. It has evidence, and a timetable, and a hundred and ten thousand people in a football stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Carl isn't a cop anymore. He's a retired New York detective with ringing ears, gambling debts, a borrowed lime-green rental, and a landlady who won't stop feeding him. But he's been the man at the door too many times to quit asking who wired the bell-and why every answer points everywhere except where it should.
