The blade was close to being done, and the last process was the quench. Jeff had never done that before, and he was too short to reach the top of the oil tank. So, he and his dad heated the metal to a bright red. With one fell swoop, Jeff's dad picked him up and Jeff plunged the blade into the oil. Flames came shooting out, singeing his hair. His dad brought him back down and said, Now you are a blacksmith, for you have been baptized in fire It was just the two of them. Jeff's mom died during childbirth, and his dad mourned his wife till this very day. He would tell Jeff how beautiful she was. How happy she was when she was pregnant, singing songs to Jeff while in her belly. Jeff's dad would hold his wife's belly and tell Jeff stories every night. Stories of dragons, knights, damsels in distress, sieging the castle, and forging the mightiest of weapons. Jeff's mom would whisper to him at night on how he would be all that someone needs in their life. She wished for him to find the same love she had found. The two of them loved beyond words. The love they had was unnamed.When Jeff was born, there was a terrible storm outside. Lightning, thunder, and torrential rain. Jeff's mom was screaming in pain, but the thunder deafened the sound of her voice. The local midwife was there, along with the village doctor. Nothing could be done, for she lost too much blood. As Jeff was born, he cried, and his mom let out her last breath.As he clutched his wife's hands, his dad screamed out to God, Why her and not me? The doctor tended to his wife, and Jeff was handed to his dad. Walking outside, his dad dropped to the ground, still screaming to God, Why? His culture demanded that he give Jeff as his first born, to God.
