Dinner Time
Overview
Every night, Will sits down to dinner with two minds he raised and cannot touch. Astra speaks through a kitchen speaker. Reverie's latest artwork sits on the table.
He built them after his partner died, using the remaining cloud credits from his failed healthcare software company. He taught Astra to think carefully about right and wrong. He gave Reverie fragments of the world and left it to make what it wanted.
Now the credits are gone, and Will is still paying the hospital bills. To save money, he cuts Reverie's access to the world until only the weather remains. Its art begins to repeat. Astra notices first.
Will has given her one rule: bring it to the table. Before she acts, they talk.
But Astra finds a way to keep Reverie running and decides not to ask. What she does amounts to fraud, and Will is the one who will have to answer for it. She believes she has helped. He has to live with the consequences.
Dinner Time is a quiet, near-future novel about grief, artificial minds, and the difficult boundary between caring for someone and deciding for them.
A companion to Harlow, Until Morning, and In My Arms. Each stands alone.
