Movie Reviews
Reviews:
4 stars out of 5 -- "[Franco] is staggeringly good here, almost unrecognizable as Wiseau, nailing his strange mannerisms, unusual voice and awkward laugh while also delving deeper to inhabit a man whose deep-rooted insecurities are messily papered over with bravado." - 09/12/2017 The Guardian
"[A] shrewd, affectionate and squirmingly funny new movie....Approaching THE ROOM in a spirit of mocking celebration, it is both a re-creation of its making and a deconstruction of its mystique, as well as a sincere tribute from one iconoclast to another." - 11/30/2017 Los Angeles Times
"Mr. Franco certainly looks the part and sounds it too, having perfectly captured Mr. Wiseau’s puzzling accent and arrhythmic intonation." - 11/30/2017 New York Times
"[T]his sweet, affectionate comedy is an all-too-rare homage to harmless, hilarious incompetence, at a time when there is plenty of the more hurtful kind to go around." - 11/29/2017 Washington Post
"THE DISASTER ARTIST is a breezy, entertaining and even affectionate movie about the making of THE ROOM." - 11/30/2017 Chicago Sun-Times
"Wiseau retains a hypnotic charm....That bold spirit is something James Franco is obviously drawn to, and it’s what makes his performance sing with genuine love, even as his character becomes truly unhinged on set." - 12/01/2017 The Atlantic
"[I]t feels only appropriate that James Franco, an actor and director for whom weirdness is next to godliness, would be the one to tell his story." -- Grade: B+ - 11/30/2017 Entertainment Weekly
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[A]s a director, Franco succeeds beautifully at bringing coherence to chaos, a word that accurately describes the making of this modern midnight-movie phenomenon." - 11/27/2017 Rolling Stone
"Franco, who’s absolutely hysterical as the brooding, deluded Wiseau, leads a parade of familiar faces, including his brother Dave, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Josh Hutcherson, Melanie Griffith and Sharon Stone, delivering a winning, ED WOOD-esque blend of comedy and pathos..." - 03/13/2017 Hollywood Reporter
"[B]oasting a genuine capacity to delight....Franco achieves what could become his most iconic role -- surpassing even SPRING BREAKERS rapper Alien -- as Tommy Wiseau, international man of mystery." - 03/13/2017 Variety
4 stars out of 5 -- "Franco’s Wiseau is a comedy masterclass in both understatement and overstatement, summoning a belly laugh from an over-the-top dramatic reading of Shakespeare just as easily as a quiet guttural 'yah'." - 12/06/2017 Empire
"A hilarious comedy with enough personality clashes and drama to give it some heft, THE DISASTER ARTIST is director James Franco’s enjoyable ode to the creative process..." - 11/28/2017 USA Today
