The Disciple of God Part Two : Inheritance and Surrender
Overview
The Greek word for disciple is transliterated as mathetes, literally meaning "the one who learns," and is derived from the verb manthano, meaning "to learn." It describes someone who receives instruction from another, like an apprentice learning a trade under a master craftsman. A true disciple, therefore, does not merely acquire knowledge or accumulate information; he puts into practice what he has been taught. A disciple follows the Teacher, learns from the Teacher, and lives according to the Teacher's instructions. Yet discipleship must never be confused with replacing the Teacher or assuming His rightful position. No human teacher, mentor, or spiritual leader can take the place of the One who alone is our Lord and Master. Jesus Christ remains our one true Teacher and our Lord, and every genuine disciple must remain a follower of Him above all else. Discipleship is not about following a man, imitating a religious system, or becoming a replica of another person, but about learning from Christ, obeying His Word, walking in His ways, and becoming increasingly conformed to His likeness. This two-part study series on discipleship explores what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in the context of the Great Commission recorded in Matthew 28:18-20. It challenges us to look beyond a superficial understanding of discipleship and rediscover the call to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, learn from Him continually, obey His commands without compromise, and make disciples who, in turn, follow Him faithfully.
