Overview
The Great Commission is to 'make disciples', not decisions. Too many 'evangelists' think that their work is done when they see a conversion, but the work really begins at that point - just as our work as a father is not done when our child is born, for that is when the work really begins. Furthermore, it is a journey: we have not fulfilled the Commission until we have nurtured and raised the new-born believer, provided for them, and protected them until they can raise their own 'children'.
The word, 'disciple' means 'student'. And that is where this course goes. There have been many that focus on personal faith, even 'improvement' and development, but few lift up their eyes to look beyond the individual, to consider the future, who they will influence, their ongoing service for others, the Kingdom, and God.
The aim of this discipleship is not just to raise strong believers, but workers, builders, servants, ministers; the focus is therefore on the 'beyond', on others - not how am I developing, but how am I developing others? We aim to establish a foundation for ministry in our lives, and in others, so that the Kingdom can be extended, and God's name glorified. We begin with the personal disciplines necessary for spiritual growth, from which ministry flows, and we will learn what ministry really entails, before progressing to the doctrinal knowledge needed to make that ministry effective.
I hope that the shift in focus will make this discipleship course a little different. I prefer to avoid the word 'course', which creates the impression that we could work through these pages, and emerge as a disciple or minister. Oh If it were only so simple These are points to consider, but character development takes years, for it is a lifelong journey - it is a route, not a course. This cannot be rushed, though investing time and effort will reap rewards. I encourage you to knuckle down, a to be very deliberate in your endeavours, but remember that it is God who transforms us - by ourselves we can do nothing. Indeed, he is the potter, so he is the one to decide what role we should play - it is not for us to take it upon ourselves to decide what our ministry should be. What we can say, is that we are all called to minister, as in serve, so we only need to find out exactly how he wants us to serve.
