Downsizing
Overview
In this sci-fi satire, scientists discover a way to shrink people down to about six inches tall, and hope to use the technique to build micro communities that will reduce humanity's impact on the environment. A frustrated Omaha resident (Matt Damon) agrees to the procedure after learning that he'll be able to afford a much more opulent lifestyle in his new micro village, but he soon discovers that his new home isn't all it's cracked up to be. Christoph Waltz, Kristen Wiig, Hong Chau, Jason Sudeikis, Udo Kier, Neil Patrick Harris, and Laura Dern co-star. Directed by Alexander Payne (ELECTION, SIDEWAYS, NEBRASKA).

Movie Reviews
Reviews:
5 stars out of 5 -- "What a spry, nuanced, winningly digressive movie this is. Payne’s handling is perfect." - 08/30/2017 The Guardian
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Alexander Payne, one of our best and most inventive filmmakers, is thinking big about being small....A bracing comedy of shocking gravity..." - 12/19/2017 Rolling Stone
"[T]he story’s whimsical conceit, somehow both rigorous and nonsensical, makes for a genuinely disarming, even discomfiting vision." - 12/21/2017 Los Angeles Times
"Mr. Damon’s regular-guy affability carries the movie through its expository phase, which is a lot of fun. Mr. Payne has an admirably concrete logistical sense and an eye for amusing incongruities." - 12/21/2017 New York Times
"Weird and wonderful....This wildly imaginative flight of fancy strikes an admirably poised balance between whimsy, screwball comedy, social satire and generous meditation on the foibles and highest aspirations of human nature." - 12/21/2017 Washington Post
"Waltz has a blast playing the party king Dusan, who has some wise observations about the ways of this new world. And Hong Chau is brilliant as the fiery and funny and fantastically blunt Ngoc Lan." - 12/21/2017 Chicago Sun-Times
"Captivating, funny and possessed of a surprise-filled zig-zag structure that makes it impossible to anticipate where it's headed, this is a deeply humane film that, like the best Hollywood classics, feels both entirely of its moment and timeless." - 08/30/2017 Hollywood Reporter
"[A]n outrageously matter-of-fact science-fiction fairy tale -- a kind of live-action Pixar movie on acid. It’s HONEY, I SHRUNK THE ADULTS made by a deadpan social satirist." - 08/30/2017 Variety
"[I]t proves Payne’s strengths as a visual storyteller and his commitment to social realities. There are plenty of intricate, hilarious visual jokes throughout..." - 01/01/2018 Film Comment
4 stars out of 5 -- "Ambitious, playful, thoughtful and emotional, DOWNSIZING takes a Pixar-level high concept -- in the near future, miniaturised humans will live in small colonies to help an overstuffed planet -- and mostly wrings it for comedic, political and emotional gold." - 01/23/2018 Empire
