To the Ends of the Earth
Overview
Yoko (Atsuko Maeda) longs to be a singer, but for now, she has to endure being the host of a travel program run by abusive director Yoshioka (Shôta Sometani) and his apathetic crew. Their latest assignment sends them to Uzbekistan, and even in a foreign country, Yoko's mistreatment continues: among others, she is forced to eat a local delicacy that is undercooked and repeatedly ride a dangerous-looking fairground ride until she vomits. The only thing she looks forward to is exploring the local area by herself. Written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

Movie Reviews
Reviews:
"An unpredictable, freewheeling affair which semi-humorously chronicles the wanderings and misadventures of a Japanese TV presenter compiling a travelogue about the landlocked country....[A] gentle-paced odyssey..." - 08/22/2019 Hollywood Reporter
"The central role of the intrepid but naive reporter Yoko is appealingly played by J-popstar-turned-actress Atusko Maeda..." - 10/15/2019 Variety
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[A] movie where gorgeously lit and framed exterior photography, as well as consummately precise body-language-centric performances, often convey more than most dialogue could." - 12/11/2020 RogerEbert.com
"TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH gradually incorporates elements of an adventure movie, self-reflexive film shoot, and even musical melodrama. By the end, it’s no less than one of the most moving films Kurosawa has ever made." - 12/07/2020 A.V. Club
