Overview
Harish Rao is twenty-six and the engine works. The obstacle is a man in Pune who has been sitting on his grant application for four months and who has never once said no.
Dilip Rane is a Senior Programme Officer in the ADRC's grants division, nine years in the same designation because the post is worth more held than vacated. He takes no bribes. He tells no lies. He selects from the truth what to reveal and what to withhold, which leaves no record of anything, and he does it on the authority of five words that appear in every government framework in the country: as per the decision of the officer concerned.
What Harish has: a rotating detonation engine that has run for sixty-three seconds, three filed patents and a leased floor in Chakan.
What he needs: a test cell. The test cell needs the grant. The grant needs an environmental clearance that cannot be issued until the facility is built.
In Bombay, the actress he is going to marry is refusing to shoot a song sequence, and finding out what refusal costs in her own industry.
Event Horizon is the second novel of The Ignition Trilogy: what a man does after he has already proved the impossible and found out that the proof was the easy part. A fighter jet programme given up in discipline rather than defeat. A pivot from defence to commercial aviation that the industry does not see coming. A German with twelve years of Airbus launch-customer work and nine at an arms manufacturer behind him, who walks away from both for seven percent of a company in Pune, because he has run the arithmetic and it is not close.
And at one hundred kilometres, where the atmosphere stops being a medium, the question he has not been able to put an instrument on since the night the wave first held.
Its idea is that the thing which stops a capable man is almost never malice. It is a procedure, operated exactly as written, by somebody who is not doing anything wrong.
The engineering is real and is not decoration. Three appendices, a glossary and the full programme cost structure sit at the back for readers who want them.
