Excusing Violence : The narration of gender violence between myths and stereotypes
Overview
Male violence against women is strongly condemned by the public opinion. However, our experience teaches us that gender inequalities are anything but gone: between sexist jokes said without thinking, unfairness in the workplace, and actual abuses, our daily life keeps being studded with episodes of gender violence.
To understand this paradoxical situation, we can not ignore the cultural weight that media holds, and especially the one held by social communications - an exemplary case of how even messages that declare their firm opposition to gender violence can actually spread ideas and practices that are socially dangerous. There's a way to fight back this phenomenon: a conscious and careful consumption of the messages that media keeps offering us every day.
