Overview
Experiencing Gujarat: Its Cultural Diversity and Asmita is a travel memoir encapsulating the author's experiences of four decades of travel and stay in Gujarat while serving in the Indian Postal Service. Her travels and sojourns gave her an opportunity to experience Gujarat beyond its political contribution to India's freedom struggle and its position as an industrial powerhouse.
It goes beyond Gandhi, Patel, Ambani, and Adani to present the amazing cultural diversity of Gujarat, reflected in its colourful festivals, fairs, folk and tribal dances, cuisine, textiles, handicrafts, and embroidered clothes. Its architecture is a mix of Hindu, Jain, and Muslim temples and mosques. Stepwells, arches or torans, palaces, and havelis of Rajas, Nawabs, and rich traders dot the land, reflecting its glorious past.
Each region, be it Central Gujarat, Saurashtra, or Kutch, is shaped by its geography. Its immense coastline and salt-marshy desert-the Rann of Kutch-contribute to its distinctive character. Each region also has its own diverse flora and fauna, including the innumerable water birds that flock to its lakes, water bodies, and rivers.
