Overview
This book considers how psychotherapists and clinicians can understand and work with gender-related distress in young people, including those who identify as transgender or are questioning their gender. At its centre is a systemic-developmental understanding of identity: how a sense of self takes shape through the interplay of body, mind, relationships, family, culture and the wider social world. Drawing on developmental psychology and family and systemic thinking, the authors locate gender-related distress within the broader processes of adolescence. They examine identity development, embodiment, emerging sexuality, co-occurring difficulties, and the social and cultural contexts in which young people are growing up. The book asks what good psychotherapeutic exploration looks like in an area where clinical questions have become unusually contested. Bringing together theory, research, clinical experience and detailed case studies, it argues for careful formulation, curiosity and room for understanding to develop over time. It shows how established and modified psychotherapeutic principles can support clinicians, young people and their families in co-exploring gender-related distress, while navigating the developmental, ethical and professional complexities of contemporary practice.
