Overview
Naya Kaur gets seven minutes in a doorway with the man behind ten corridor deaths, and he answers every question without adding a word.
A production order forces a Vaughan law office to name the owner behind a white Tacoma: Elliot Marsh, a courier driver in a basement apartment. A cashier at a Port Severn gas station then picks his licence photograph out of a six-photo array in under eight seconds.
Naya brings three photographs and a business card. Elliot admits the truck and asks for a lawyer. He gives her nothing she can use. She reads a jaw that clenches twice and a left hand that closes for half a second, then drives away certain of what she cannot yet prove.
Elliot has scrubbed his apartment for 72 hours. When she leaves he slides down the locked door and replays what she saw, while surveillance cars hold their positions in the street.
Naya wants the warrants signed before Elliot runs, because every hour of delay lets him destroy evidence. A careful judge wants one more affidavit first.
The Quiet Calculus, Book 5. The chase carries on into Book 6.
