Tom's body-brain needed a replacement in order to function in a reality of Gods and Demons where a society of body-brains like Tom, all had an advantage--a soul-consciousness-awareness thing. Finding a replacement wasn't going to be easy, what type of soul-consciousness-awareness thing would want a damaged body-brain? There was no choice but to grow one.
