A new method of calculation is suggested for estimating the effect upon the fatigue life of welded joints of residual stresses before and after their redistribution by the various strengthening treatments. This method is convenient for a comparativeevaluation of the effects of the application of different strengthening treatments to welded joints and depends upon the type of joint, parameters of cyclic loading and the strength of the parent metal. Overview

The main principles of experimental and estimated methods for the determination of fatigue life of welded joints through the stages of initiation and propagation of the fatigue cracks have been considered and take into account the effect of residual stresses. Various rules and other factors are analyzed which relate to the fatigue strength of welded joints under the action of residual stresses which depend upon the parameters of external loading, type of joint, and mechanical properties of the materials used. A review of strengthening treatments for increasing the fatigue life of the welded joints is given. One group of such treatments is based upon the reduction of stress concentrations by a smooth transition in the contours of weld to the parent metal. In this group, numerous mechanical and argon arc treatments are defined. A further group includes methods for the improvement of fatigue strength of welded joints which is based upon the relieving residual, tensile stresses, or by inducing favourable residual compressive stresses in the zones of stress concentration. They include general heat treatment, vibrotreatment, cold working of the surfaces, overloading, localized heat treatment and plastic deformation of the metal. There is also data which illustrates the efficiency of new methods of surface treatment for the strengthening of welded joints; explosion and ultrasonic impact methods, which have been developed by the Paton Institute.
