Movie Reviews
Reviews:
4 stars out of 4 -- "It is a film of small notes that combine to form something major, the kind of movie that sneaks up on you and sticks with you." - 09/08/2017 RogerEbert.com
"[T]he movie has a sense of adventure. It’s rooted in that transcendent moment of childhood where almost anything you encounter -- a field of weeds, an abandoned house -- is tinged with wonder." - 05/22/2017 Variety
"The episodic nature of Baker’s film suggests that the world the characters inhabit is fast and fleeting, unsentimental but teeming with unprocessed emotions. This picture rings true..." - 09/01/2017 Film Comment
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Willem Dafoe should be on top of Oscar's Best Supporting Actor list for his stellar work in THE FLORIDA PROJECT, a film that's as hilarious and heartbreaking as it is unclassifiable." - 10/04/2017 Rolling Stone
"These are the kind of Americans to which Baker is perpetually drawn....He’s spent his career throwing a spotlight over people other movies tend to exploit or stereotype or just ignore entirely." -- Grade: A - 10/05/2017 A.V. Club
"All childhoods must come to an end, few of them as piercingly as the one in THE FLORIDA PROJECT, Sean Baker’s raw, exuberant and utterly captivating new movie." - 10/05/2017 Los Angeles Times
"To balance joy and desperation as gracefully as Mr. Baker does -- to interweave giddiness and heartbreak -- is no easy feat." - 10/05/2017 New York Times
"With THE FLORIDA PROJECT, the gifted writer-director Sean Baker delivers a sun-dappled but decidedly dark and severely fractured fairy tale..." - 10/12/2017 Chicago Sun-Times
5 stars out of 5 -- "[The director] once again uses first-time actors and extras recruited from the streets around his set, drawing extraordinary performances from them. It’s a moving, emotional masterpiece." - 11/07/2017 Empire
"Baker’s gift is to make us see these characters, get us to care about their lives, and remind us that they’re everywhere in America, banging on the doors of the Magic Kingdom." - 12/27/2019 Boston Globe
