Overview
John Wayne is the leader of a squadron of American pilots-for-hire in China, pre-Pearl Harbor. The men are wildly outnumbered by the Japanese, and also deal with difficulties within their own ranks. Excellent air combat scenes, some taut military-court drama, and even a little romance between Wayne and a lovely British nurse.

Synopsis:
John Wayne is fightin' mad as the squadron leader of a group of American pilots-for-hire in World War II China. Not only are they wildly outnumbered by the Japanese, but they have plenty of problems within their own ranks. Things really heat up after the Duke's best friend gets a couple of pilots killed thanks to his pointless hotdogging. Wayne stands by his friend, helps the Chinese people, and manages to pitch a little woo with one of the British nurses on the scene; all in all, not a bad day's work.
Notes:
The film features a foreword written by Chinese General Chiang Kai-shek honoring the American Volunteer Group who, in his words, "have become the symbol of the invincible strength of the forces now upholding the cause of humanity and justice."
The American Volunteer Group was a collection of paid pilots who helped the Chinese battle the Japanese Air Force during the two years preceding their attack on Pearl Harbor. Reportedly, the pilots were paid $600 by the Chinese government for each Japanese plane they shot down.
