Overview
Aldric Voss spent forty-two years building frameworks. Roads. Compacts. Courts. Oversight bodies. A system of institutions designed to make structural problems addressable without depending on any single person to address them.
Then Sura sent him a letter.
She had been reading his philosophical document - What Frameworks Cannot Do - specifically the section arguing that frameworks cannot manufacture genuine alignment. That alignment has to be chosen. That the framework creates conditions but not the thing itself.
She had been observing something in her liaison work that she did not have language for until she read it. Now she had language for it but the language raised a question she could not answer from inside what she knew.
The question required him to see what she was pointing at rather than read a description of it.
Volume VI is what happens when Aldric goes to see.
What Sura has found is not a philosophical problem. It is thirty-four families - western bloodlines in active emergence, suppressed for a generation longer than the eastern families, routed away from the support structures the Voss Elder Principle guaranteed them by a faction inside the Mage Council's administrative apparatus. No single action provably wrong. Every action with a procedural explanation. A pattern visible only to someone who has spent fifty years learning what institutional capture looks like from the inside.
Aldric has been stuck for eleven weeks by the time Sura arrives in Port Cassia. The network has given him everything it has. Every counter-move identified. Every mechanism examined. None of it reaches the root. The faction designed their operation to survive the frameworks he built - and they found the gap in the principle he wrote, and built inside it, and the gap is not accessible to any tool he knows how to use.
The answer, when it comes, does not come from Aldric.
It comes from Sura - from what she has been observing in rooms where the western families' capacity is operating. From what she can do in those rooms that no framework can manufacture and no provision can require. From the specific quality of genuine alignment made visible and felt, arriving in rooms before people have decided how to receive it.
What Frameworks Cannot Do becomes the most important document Aldric has ever written. Not because he wrote it. Because Sura corrected it - seven times, in one revision - and the corrections made it true.
Volume VI follows Aldric from fifty-two through fifty-five, and Sura from twenty-eight through thirty - two people approaching the same destination from different directions, discovering that the frameworks are not the destination but the road, and that roads require someone to make them move.
"The framework is not the work. The framework is what makes the work possible. The work is what the people inside it choose to do when the framework gives them room to choose."
