Some of its members were also raised behind enemy lines, and a few had served in Thomas' North Carolina Legion. The regiment fought in many of the smaller battles in the west, ending the war as a part of Vaughn's brigade in the Shenandoah Valley as a part of Early's Valley Campaign.
