The History of the Rite of the Holy Week in the Coptic Church
Overview
The History of the Rite of Holy Week in the Coptic Church is a scholarly study of where the Coptic Holy Week (Pascha Week) services came from and how they grew. Written by Associate Professor Youhanna Nessim Youssef, it is one of the first works to gather and analyse the different sources that trace the origin and development of this rite.
The Coptic Church is one of the most ancient churches in the world, and almost all of its rites can be traced back to the Apostolic era. Yet complex composite rites such as Holy Week have received less attention than the equivalent services of other traditions, such as the Byzantine Church.
Today each hour of Pascha Week follows a similar pattern: prophecies, the paschal praise, psalm, Gospel, exposition and daytime litanies, with special hymns at key hours such as the Sixth Hour of Good Friday. But it was not always so. The current rite comes mainly from a very early fourth-century Christian tradition and was enriched over the centuries with further readings and hymns.
The author examines sources across ten centuries, written by many different hands, to draw a clear map of how the modern rite and lectionary developed.
An essential resource for students of liturgy, clergy, deacons, theological colleges and anyone who wants to understand the services they pray every year during the holiest week of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
