The third entry in Kristen Perrin’s Castle Knoll Murder Mystery series is the strongest book yet, featuring twin murders set decades apart.

After solving her great-aunt Frances’ murder, Annie Adams has inherited Frances’ considerable wealth and home in Castle Knoll, England. In How to Cheat Your Own Death, Annie travels to London for a bit of respite, weary from the Castle Knoll cases, but makes a gruesome discovery upon her arrival: The body of her artist mother’s apprentice, Felicity Rowe, was found with its heart removed.

Annie has solved multiple murders in Castle Knoll, aided by Frances’ journals and meticulous notes about the locals. Once again, these records help guide Annie: In the 1960s, Frances’ friend Vera was killed in the same way as Felicity. Vera’s husband was convicted of the crime, but Frances always suspected someone else was responsible. Can Annie unravel a decades-long mystery that even Frances could not solve?

Perrin has created a tightly paced, complex mystery with dual timelines. Both Frances’ and Annie’s perspectives are equally riveting and important to the case, and both women grow significantly throughout the book. As they find their footing in London decades apart, Frances and Annie come into their own as sleuths, friends and family members.

Series fans will recognize returning characters like Rowan Crane and Ford Gravesdown, and the story is stronger for their evolving relationships with Annie and Frances. New characters, like Vera, her brother Max and his on-again, off-again girlfriend add depth and intricacy to the novel.

This can be read as a standalone, although readers familiar with the series will appreciate the references to previous books. And Perrin concludes How to Cheat Your Own Death with a masterful cliffhanger that will leave readers clamoring for a fourth entry in the series.
