Human Impact and Environmental Risks in the Hills of Yaoundé
Overview
Yaound , the political and administrative capital of Cameroon, has experienced unprecedented population and urban growth in recent decades. The characteristics of this growth-which, while not stopping, has nonetheless slowed since 1990-are its continuity and acceleration. The dramatic population pressure has naturally subjected the natural reserves of the city's high peaks to intense human activities that degrade the environment. The population is often unaware of the damage it causes and the dangers to which it exposes itself on a daily basis. The tools of the Accelerated Participatory Research Method (MARP) and Environmental Assessment (EA) have enabled us to identify, inventory, and describe these activities, and to propose a typology of risks in order to draw the government's attention and make recommendations for the rehabilitation of Yaound 's hills, which are veritable ecotourism treasures. This document serves as an important data source for students and environmentalists. It is a decision-making tool for urban planners and policymakers in the field of urban environmental management.
