Osman also brings back many of the series’ colorful supporting characters, including PC Donna De Freitas and her boyfriend, the sometimes-criminal Bogdan Jankowsi, plus the newly paroled drug dealer Connie Johnson. New characters like Connie’s protege, Tia Malone, serve the story well, sliding seamlessly into life at Coopers Chase Retirement Village. The Impossible Fortune revolves around cryptocurrency, codes and secret compounds, so there are fewer gunfights and direct threats to the lives of the Thursday Murder Club in this installment. But it’s still fast-paced and deftly plotted, a worthy new entry to the beloved series.
