Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club team is back with a new mystery involving bombs, bitcoin and an unbreakable code. The Impossible Fortune begins one year after the events of The Last Devil to Die, the fourth Thursday Murder Club book. The gang is gathered for the wedding of Joyce’s daughter, Joanna. While Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron are in their element, charming guests and indulging in celebratory drinks, Elizabeth is subdued. She’s still grieving the loss of her husband, Stephen, and learning to navigate life without him. But then Nick Silver, the best man, asks Elizabeth for help: Someone planted a bomb under his car, and he suspects they’re trying to kill him for his half of an unbreakable code that leads to a financial windfall. Elizabeth’s spy training kicks in, and before the wedding’s end, she promises to investigate. When Nick disappears, Elizabeth alerts the rest of the Thursday Murder Club, and they race to uncover what happened to him, his code and the mysterious bomb. The Impossible Fortune is a quieter book than previous installments of the series, but no less engaging. Osman excels at bringing his characters to life and showing their continued growth and evolution. All four of the main characters are grappling with something distinct: Elizabeth is experiencing the ongoing process of grieving and healing; Joyce’s focus is on deepening her relationship with her daughter, son-in-law and friends; therapist Ibrahim realizes that his favorite criminal client may not be taking his advice with the best of intentions; and Ron is navigating complex family troubles that include domestic violence. Osman also brings back many of the series’ colorful supporting characters, including PC Donna De Freitas and her boyfriend, the sometimes-criminal Bogdan Jankowsi, plus the newly paroled drug dealer Connie Johnson. New characters like Connie’s protege, Tia Malone, serve the story well, sliding seamlessly into life at Coopers Chase Retirement Village. The Impossible Fortune revolves around cryptocurrency, codes and secret compounds, so there are fewer gunfights and direct threats to the lives of the Thursday Murder Club in this installment. But it’s still fast-paced and deftly plotted, a worthy new entry to the beloved series.
