For some people, peace and quiet is a luxury rarely found and fervently coveted. Mallory Viridian is not one of those people. Sitting around her space station home without a hint of a murder to investigate has her climbing the walls. She needn’t fear. Mur Lafferty’s third Midsolar Murders mystery, Infinite Archive, has plenty of chaos in store for our favorite true crime author-cum-detective. Another head-spinning sci-fi caper awaits.

Of course, there’s not nothing to do. Mallory can continue to learn how to communicate and live with the variety of alien species she’s met aboard station Eternity. She’s got a baby sentient spaceship to look after. She’s got an agent asking for her next big novel. But it’s all pretty drab when you’re used to people getting killed so you can solve a crime, save the day and put it in your next book. But that’s the thing: Without a recent death, Mallory’s out of ideas. That is, until a massive transport ship carrying an entire murder mystery convention arrives at the station, and Mallory’s agent informs her that she’ll be the keynote speaker. But the newly arrived ship is strange, carrying a new alien of unknown motivations and origins. When a convention attendee is murdered, Mallory must figure out how all the pieces fit together or risk an intergalactic disaster of massive proportions.

If you’ve come to know this series from the previous two entries (Station Eternity and Chaos Terminal), you’ll know that Lafferty’s strong authorial voice shines. Some particularly impressive sequences read like a fiber-optic fever dream. At once frenetic, wry, witty and thoughtful, her tone helps ground the reader amid interactions between many complex alien species and sentient technologies. Lafferty knows when to use humor or when to acknowledge the chaos directly, grounding the reader for just a heartbeat.

I highly recommend reading the prior books in Lafferty’s series for maximum enjoyment; her sci-fi concepts are ambitious and I, a new reader, found myself somewhat overwhelmed at first. But fans of the series, or people looking for books that gesture to Douglas Adams or certain very popular British mystery shows, should pick this one up right away.

Writer’s block is serious business. Sometimes it takes space bugs, sentient starships, the internet, rock monsters and a little bit of murder to get back on track. Sign me up.
