The Kingdoms of the Dead
Overview
Sixty-three days after the emperor's death, the empire still has nobody who can sign for it. The names have been released. Every ancestor the state once silenced can now speak, be acknowledged, and be seen, and the country is drowning in the consequences. Ilyra holds a provisional stewardship with ninety days on the clock. Tarin, who refused a crown, pays out of his own wages to print a two-sentence correction and takes work as a courier. Mara, stripped of her authority to certify anything alone, investigates two soldiers whose bodies were borrowed by their ancestors and never given back. Renn escorts provisions along tolled roads while the ghost at his shoulder argues for harder measures. Companies now pay nearly double the watch rate for borrowed service, so the poor rent out their bodies and come home with days missing. A convention has to be convened at a river town, and the delegates have to survive the roads to reach it.
Expect hearings, wage ledgers, flood logistics and a vote count rather than sieges. Nobody is crowned. Book two of The Unquiet Throne trilogy.
