{ "item_title" : "The Lady and the Lord", "item_author" : [" Talbot Mundy "], "item_description" : "How far can a convincing performance carry a woman when money is scarce and appearances determine who receives credit? Mrs Kitty Crothers, an actress and widow, recounts her latest adventures in a lively first-person narrative, turning financial difficulty into a comic contest of nerve, language and social perception. Her aim is to pursue a possible claim involving the Carruthers estates, but credibility may prove as valuable as cash. In New York and across a world of expensive accommodation and legal offices, Kitty draws upon theatrical skill, persuasive conversation and carefully staged appearances. Bankers, hotel officials, lawyers and aristocratic contacts must all be handled, while inheritance, speculation and credit become instruments in an uncertain game. The boundary between resourceful enterprise and manipulation remains teasingly unstable, exposing the assumptions attached to class, gender and outward respectability without surrendering the story's brisk comic momentum. Kitty's own voice drives this humorous short story: colloquial, interruption-prone and alive with English slang, American expressions and financial jargon. Comic misunderstandings sharpen the contrast between what people see and what is actually true, while the framed narration allows her account to unfold as both adventure and performance. Financial intrigue and confidence-game elements give the social satire its edge, making every conversation a negotiation over status, belief and solvency.
