Overview
At sixty-eight, Adrian Vale has committed no great crime. He worked, raised two children, stayed with his wife, and became the kind of man others call good. Three months after Helen's death, he wakes at 3:17 a.m. to find a stranger in the chair beside his bed. The man has Adrian's face, his voice - and the life Adrian refused to live. 'I came to collect what you owe.' Night after night, Adrian is forced to revisit a train he did not board, a marriage he called peaceful, the possibilities he taught his children to fear, and the colleague who paid for his silence. Yet the visitor does not ask him to recover the past. He asks for an answer from the life that remains. The Life Left Unchosen is a haunting philosophical novella about guilt without self-punishment, responsibility without innocence, and the freedom to become different before possibility closes.
