Having taken root in the vast desert and Gobi for 62 years, Liu Mingting actively explored new approaches and sought breakthroughs in sand control, desertification management, and ecological restoration. He mastered the use of 200 species of sand-fixing plants and discovered five new varieties of tamarisk (also known as red willow), placing China's tamarisk research at the forefront of the world. For this, he is respectfully called Liu the Tamarisk. He also invented the cultivation technique of planting Cistanche deserticola (a medicinal plant) on tamarisk roots, which successfully integrated ecological and economic benefits in Xinjiang's desert regions.
