Little Ghost and the Robot is a fabulous story about taking risks, experiencing joy and finding family in unexpected places. David Litchfield is an award-winning children’s author-illustrator who has created numerous books (The Bear and the Piano, The Dinosaur Next Door, Lights on Cotton Rock) as well as illustrated for authors such as Kate DiCamillo (Ferris) and Gregory Maguire (Cress Watercress). In Little Ghost and the Robot, his illustrations and prose work like magic to chronicle an unlikely friendship between a lonely little ghost and a lively robot.

This tale will grab young readers from the opening spread, as a ghost girl gazes out the window of a dark, spooky house at the glistening lights of a city in the distance. There’s nothing scary about this friendly ghost, with rosy cheeks and a lovely diaphanous gown. One day a large box is delivered to her doorstep, and out pops a flying robot. Little Ghost craves fun, readers soon learn, while Robot thrives on logic. Nonetheless, their sudden kinship brings out the best in each other. Robot is a bundle of buzzing energy, and as they play chess and dress-up, he muses, “Is this what fun feels like?”

The new friends realize, however, that Robot has been delivered to the wrong address, so they venture into the city in search of his family, despite the qualms of Little Ghost, who hasn’t left the house in oh so long. Litchfield’s artwork sparkles on every page, beautifully contrasting the dark, dreary tones of Little Ghost’s house with bright dollops of shimmering color in the city. The text highlights the dichotomy of the urban landscape: “It was big and loud and scary. But it also shined like a diamond and sang like a choir.”

Outside a theater, the pair meet a lonely woman, Mrs. Potts, and together, they venture inside, experiencing its delights and forming a friendship. Litchfield keeps the surprises coming with every page, ultimately reaching a heartwarming conclusion. He excels at drawing attention to grand vistas (views of the city, the energy of a live theater) as well as focusing on smaller, intimate moments among his characters. By the end, Little Ghost’s house becomes infused with sunshine and new life.

As Little Ghost notes, “Oh, a family is a wonderful thing. It’s a group of people who look after and love one another.” Little Ghost and the Robot is a tale of finding friends and family just when you need them most. It’s a scintillating romp with a heart of gold.
