He did not have a literary education; instead he graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in Economics and from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. and an M.D. He practiced Nephrology in the San Francisco Bay Area for 30 years and began attending poetry workshops with Diane Frank, Dale Biron, and Prartho Sereno.
