The Marsh of Kings : Book III of the Fracturing Empire
Overview
Book III: The Marsh of Kings
Rome has sent an emperor to destroy them. Cniva intends to bury him in the marsh.
The scattered war bands beyond the Danube have become an army.
Under Cniva, Goths, Carpi, Sarmatian riders, deserters, captives, and rival household leaders move south against the Roman Empire. Among them rides Theodemir, no longer the overlooked younger son who first followed a stolen herd. He is now a commander whose men trust him to read the road, preserve their horses, and bring them home alive.
But a larger command carries a larger guilt.
The host crosses the Danube, tests Roman walls, survives hunger and winter, and closes around Philippopolis. Each success proves Theodemir's skill while exposing the civilians, wounded, and unwilling followers hidden beneath every count of victory. Widar no longer accepts necessity as an answer. Wulf carries injuries that command cannot repair. Fritila discovers that courage matters most when no leader is watching.
Then Emperor Decius marches against them.
In the reeds and flooded ground near Abritus, signals disappear, formations break apart, and Theodemir receives commands that cannot all be obeyed. To preserve one part of the host, he may have to abandon another.
Rome will remember the emperor who dies there.
Theodemir will remember everyone the victory required him to spend.
The Marsh of Kings concludes The Fracturing Empire, a historical trilogy of Gothic war bands, Roman frontier collapse, divided loyalties, and the burden carried by those who lead others into death.
Short back-cover version
Rome has sent an emperor to destroy them. Cniva intends to bury him in the marsh.
The war bands beyond the Danube have become an army, and Theodemir has become one of its commanders.
As Cniva's coalition moves through Roman territory, every victory enlarges the number of soldiers, captives, civilians, and wounded placed beneath Theodemir's authority. Philippopolis proves that disciplined conquest is still conquest. Widar's loyalty begins to break. Old wounds travel farther than the men who carry them.
At Abritus, amid reeds, mud, broken standards, and contradictory commands, Theodemir must decide which part of the host can be saved.
Rome will remember its dead emperor.
Theodemir will remember the price of victory.
